Learn to Sail
Start Sailing 1 and 2
The ‘Learn to Sail’ course at DSC runs for 8 weeks and will take you from novice to competent! During the courses you will have hands-on experience, beginning sailing with an instructor and learning the basics. By the end of the course, we expect participants to be able to complete a small ‘race’, guided and supervised by instructors.
Throughout the Learn to Sail, instructors will follow the Australian Sailing prescribed syllabus, with an emphasis not only on learning and progression but keeping in mind safety and fun!
Participants may complete the Learn to Sail 1-2 times and progression is at the sailor’s discretion or the instructor’s recommendations.
If you have recently completed a Junior Holiday Camp with us, this program is the perfect step to further develop students’ skills and become more confident with their boat handling. However, if you have not completed a Holiday Camp, you are still more than welcome to join in!
Learn to Sail runs on Sunday mornings and families are invited to stay at the club and participate in the rest of the days sailing and social events.
Cost: $520 for (24 hours including boat usage)
Better Sailing Course
Better Sailing is a progression of the Sailing Pathways and is perfect for those sailors graduating from Start Sailing 2 and looking for more time on the water and tuition before joining our club racing fleets. It will also suit those budding sailors who have some experience and confidence in small sailing craft and wish to progress their skills to a higher level.
Sailors considering this course should already be able to sail a boat confidently in up to 12 knots – a moderate breeze, be able to tack and sail on the wind, either one- or two-up.
Our Better Sailing course is held in both Sabots and PJs, and RS Fevas and Visions, suiting a wide range of conditions and confidence levels.
At the end of this course the sailors will be able to competently handle a sailing dinghy in stronger winds and have learned more advances sailing skills, such as gybing and sailing their boat fast. Some introductory racing skills are included and the sailor should be ready to join the Learn to Race programs run by the club on a Sunday.
Cost: $520 for (24 hours including boat usage)
Adult and Youth Dinghy Learn to Sail
This course is suitable for youths (16+) and adults and caters for those with no sailing experience but those with experience will also benefit from learning sailing skills with plenty of time on the water.
The course is based on the Australian Sailing Start Sailing 1 & 2 course which is the early stage of the Sailing Pathways. We use RS Feva and Vision sailing dinghies which are excellent training boats.
Sailing is a fun but sometimes physically demanding sport and so all participants must be able to swim and be capable of hoisting themselves back into a sailing dinghy from the water in the case of those inevitable capsizes.
Check out the registration page for Session Times.
